Weighted wheels for the British Spitfire in 1:24 scale with a diamond tread pattern and a five-spoke hub.
Responsibility details are not available.
One of the four combinations that the Armory brand has prepared for the British fighter in a large format. The tread carries a diamond pattern and the hub has five spokes; both things are recognizable at first sight on a finished machine, because in 1:24 scale the wheel has a diameter of over two centimeters. The set is intended as a replacement for the parts from the box, not for a build on its own.
As the Spitfire grew heavier during the war, the load on the landing gear grew as well and the design of the wheels changed. Closed covers gave way to open spoked hubs, which carried dirt away better and could be inspected more easily. The version with five arms belongs to the later solutions and appeared on machines with more powerful engines. The pattern on the tire was not cosmetic: on a soaked grass airfield it decided whether the machine would hold its direction.
The surest procedure is to spray the whole wheel in the tone of the rubber, let it dry and then paint the spoked hub in with a brush following the outline. A dark shade suits the hollows between the arms and will add depth. At the end dust the weighted area with a fine light pigment, so that use leaves its mark on it.
