A plastic kit of the American Western Star 4964 long-haul tractor in 1:24 scale from the AMT brand. The essential thing right at the start: it is a tractor, not a whole rig. A semitrailer, a trailer and a load are not included in the package, and anyone who wants to build a complete truck has to get a semitrailer separately. The 1:24 scale is common with American tractors, and the finished model comes out large and dominant, which with this class of vehicle is part of their charm.
Western Star is a North American maker of heavy trucks that built its reputation on rugged, individually configured machines for the most demanding duty. The 4900 series, to which the designation 4964 belongs, represents a classic American conventional tractor with a long hood, chrome tanks and exhaust stacks and with a sleeper cab at the back. This type of vehicle is used on long-distance routes across the continent, where a driver spends several days at a time in the cab. The conventional layout with the engine ahead of the cab is longer than the European cab-over-engine arrangement, but it offers better access to the engine and a calmer ride.
An American tractor is mainly about chrome and gloss. Spray the body over filler primer and polish it to a high gloss, because the flat surfaces of the cab hide nothing. Never paint over the chrome parts; mask them instead, and when you need to repair a sprue mark, use a quality chrome shade applied with a brush. Leave the chassis, the axles and the frame matte and accentuate them with a wash, so that they are set apart from the polished cab. It is a good idea to fit the fuel tanks and the stacks only at the end. If you are planning a semitrailer as well, matching the shade of both parts is easier if you mix the paint for both at once.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
