A dark cockpit and what has to be visible in it

Sevens with black trim are among the most frequently built variants and have one drawback: in a dark interior absolutely everything merges together. That is exactly why builders learn to work with texture instead of color. The black webbing of a strap has a roughness of its own, it reflects light differently from the vinyl seat next to it, and the metal buckle in the middle creates the single bright point of the whole tub.

The Willans Club 4X4 is a club four-point belt of British production which has appeared in open roadsters derived from the Lotus Seven for decades. The black version was always the most neutral choice and was picked by everyone who did not want any extra color in the cockpit.

How to work with it

Relief printing solves exactly the problem that arises in a black interior. The strap is not a painted area but a raised band with a real edge, so it stays legible even under a dark finish. Seats in kits of this scale come molded without belts, and without them a cockpit looks empty. The transfer procedure follows the instructions enclosed with the sheet.

Anyone who wants to go further can add dust into the folds of the strap once it has dried and take the gloss off the fittings very slightly where hands most often touch the buckle. On a racing car with a season behind it, this is often the only thing that distinguishes a display-case model from a machine a viewer will believe someone drove. Caution is in order only as to the amount: exaggerated grime looks unnatural at this scale and it is better to hold back, because the shade of the webbing cannot be restored afterwards. Try it out on a piece of scrap plastic before you touch the seat.
