An accessory set for a model of the German Panther medium tank in 1:35 scale. According to the name it holds two idler wheels of 665 mm diameter in the ribbed back form and it is cut for the kit by Takom. The target kit is given because T-Rex Studio offers Panther idler wheels in several forms and sizes, and without that detail the versions could be mistaken for one another.
The Panther has its drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear. The idler wheel keeps the track in line and the tension of the track is set through its mounted pin. That is precisely why it is a part the modeler has in view the whole time on a finished vehicle, and the differences between the individual production forms are clearly apparent on it. Besides the size, the disc of the wheel itself differed too, so a ribbed back is a distinguishing feature by which a particular vehicle is assigned to a certain period of production.
Separate the parts carefully from their gates with a sharp knife or a fine saw, sand the cuts and degrease the surface before painting. They glue reliably with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger parts a brief dry-fitted trial helps. The base deserves a primer, and only then apply the base shade. The weathering is done as on the rest of the suspension, that is a dark wash in the recesses and pigments for dust and mud in the places dirt really reaches. With an idler wheel it pays to keep some freedom while gluing until the track is seated, so that its run sits without tension.
