About product

Bristol Brigand B Mk.I in 1:144 from Valom

The Bristol Brigand B Mk.I kit in 1:144 from the Czech manufacturer Valom is aimed at RAF machines operating away from the British Isles, that is at the overseas deployments of the postwar years. The small scale makes the Brigand a rewarding addition to a collection that has to fit into a display case.

The real subject

The Brigand came about at the end of the Second World War as a successor to the torpedo-carrying Beaufighter and followed on in design from the Bristol Buckingham, from which it took over the wing and the engine installation. It was powered by a pair of Bristol Centaurus radial engines and the crew was three men. The original torpedo version, the TF Mk.I, was soon converted into the bomber and attack variant B Mk.I, which became the main production form of the type. In the RAF the Brigand served above all overseas, in operations in Malaya and over Aden, where it carried bombs and unguided rockets. It was among the last British piston-engine attack aircraft in the front line and its career ended at the start of the 1950s.

Building and painting tips

A small scale forgives less than it seems. It pays to clean up the parting lines carefully, to glue the transparent parts only once the surrounding joints have dried and to mask the cockpit with narrow strips. Metal and silver finishes need a smooth base, so polish the surface before varnishing. Decals sit better on a gloss intermediate coat and are fixed with a decal softener. The panel lines need only be suggested with a very thin shade, or the model will coarsen in this scale.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British postwar aircraft
  • Modelers who build in 1:144 because of the room in a display case
  • Anyone interested in less usual RAF types
  • More experienced builders who do not mind small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The TF Mk.I was the original torpedo variant; the B Mk.I is the bomber and attack form into which most of the machines were converted and which became the main production version.

There are fewer parts than in the large scales, but they are small. Tweezers, a sharp knife and patience when cleaning up will help.

Above all overseas, in operations in Malaya and over Aden, where it filled the role of an attack aircraft.
