About product

Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2/B with the ETC 50 rack in 1:72 scale (AZ model)

This kit in injection-molded polystyrene captures the fighter-bomber subversion Bf 109F-2/B, that is the Friedrich fitted with an ETC 50 rack under the fuselage for carrying a bomb. The manufacturer is the Czech company AZ model, which has long devoted itself to less usual versions and subversions in 1:72 scale. By the nature of the production the box suits a more experienced modeler: the surface of the parts has fine engraved detail, but the fit calls for patience and for the usual sanding of the mating surfaces.

The real subject

The Bf 109F, nicknamed Friedrich, was the development step between the E version and the later G. It brought an aerodynamically cleaner nose, rounded wingtips, a tailplane without external bracing and armament concentrated on the centerline of the aircraft. The F-2 version carried an engine cannon of 15 mm caliber and two synchronized machine guns of 7.9 mm caliber. The F-2/B subversion came from an adaptation for attacks on ground and shipping targets: under the fuselage it received an ETC rack from which a bomb weighing 50 kg was hung. Aircraft modified this way served with fighter-bomber units over the English Channel and over southern England in 1941 and 1942, where they used the speed of the aircraft for a fast run over the target.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off the sprues with a knife rather than twisting them off, and level the mating surfaces with a file. Glue them with a liquid cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint. Finish the cockpit and the interior before you close the fuselage, mask the transparencies and spray a gloss coat before the decals so that no silvering appears. With hard-edged camouflage a rolled length of modeling putty helps as a mask, while for soft edges spray from a shorter distance and at a lower pressure. A small scale forgives less, so lay the paint on in thin coats.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Bf 109s and their subversions in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want a less usual fighter-bomber variant
  • more experienced builders used to short-run molds
  • anyone interested in the air war over the English Channel in 1941 and 1942

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The letter B marks the adaptation for fighter-bomber work. The aircraft carries an ETC rack under the fuselage for hanging a bomb.

Rather not. The smaller scale and the short-run molds call for sanding the parts and for accurate work, so at least intermediate experience is advisable.

The contents differ from one release to another, so the manufacturer states them on the packaging. Go by the information given on the box itself.
