A set of shaped plugs for the landing gear bays of a model of the Fairey Fulmar Mk.I in 1:48 scale, prepared for the Trumpeter kit. The Fulmar was a British two-seat carrier fighter. The plugs close the open bays off for the time the model is being sprayed, so that neither paint nor overspray gets inside.
Landing gear bays are finished and painted separately, usually in a different shade from the outer surfaces. Masking them with tape is slow work: the space is irregular in shape, tape does not reach into the corners, and when it is peeled off it sometimes takes paint with it. A pre-shaped plug closes the opening in one go and follows its outline.
First finish and paint the bays and let the paint cure thoroughly. Only then fit the plugs, that is before the outer surfaces are sprayed. Check that they are flush with their surroundings: an edge standing out will print itself into the finish, while a plug sunk too deep will let overspray beneath it. Once the spraying is done and the finish has set, take them out carefully and look the bay over; a little overspray on the rim can be corrected with a brush.
It will be welcomed by anyone building the Fulmar from that kit who wants the transition between the bay and the skin to be clean, without an extra layer of paint. It saves most time on models sprayed in several shades or in camouflage. Paints, masking tapes and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
