An add-on set from Brengun with a Douglas-design drop tank of 150 gallons in 1:48 scale. This is not a kit of an aircraft but an underslung accessory with which a modeler refines the configuration of a finished model of an American carrier machine. A tank of this type was standard equipment and adding it noticeably changes the silhouette of the model in a display case.
Drop tanks were essential on carrier aircraft: they extended the range over the vast ocean and were released at the moment of combat, so that the machine regained its agility. Tanks of around one hundred and fifty gallons appeared under the fuselage and under the wings of American carrier aircraft at the close of the Second World War and in the Korean conflict. Structurally they were simple aerodynamic bodies with a filler at the front and a simple attachment to the pylon, produced in enormous numbers. That is precisely why the same tank turns up under a number of different types and is a welcome way for modelers to equip a model correctly for its period.
Remove the casting remnants before assembly and sand the parting line down carefully, because on a smooth body every irregularity shows. The tank is best painted separately from the aircraft, so that a gloss finish can be laid on comfortably. Strengthen the attachment to the pylon and let it dry properly before you move the model to a display case.
