A set of masking parts in kabuki paper in 1:72 scale for models of the photo-reconnaissance Crusaders in the RF-8A and RF-8G versions, from the brand New Ware. It is an accessory for painting a finished model, not a kit. The designation EXPERT is the highest of the three grades BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT that the brand commonly uses for its masks.
The Vought F-8 Crusader was a carrier-based supersonic fighter with an unusual variable-incidence wing. On takeoff and landing the wing was raised, which increased the angle of attack and thus shortened the distance needed, while the fuselage stayed level and the pilot had a good view. The RF-8A photo-reconnaissance version lost its onboard armament and was given an assembly of cameras in the nose instead. It was exactly these machines that took the low-level photographs of the missile sites in Cuba in 1962. The modernized RF-8G then flew over Vietnam and stayed in service with reserve units longer than most of the fighter versions. The reconnaissance Crusaders differ from the fighters in the shape of the lower part of the nose and in the camera windows, which is clearly visible on a model.
Kabuki paper shapes well and follows even rounded surfaces, so it suits glazing of a more complicated shape too. Rid the surfaces of grease before applying it, settle the masks with tweezers and press them down in the bends with a blunt tool. Spray in thin coats and take a mask off as soon as the paint has set.
