About product

Photo-etched flaps for the Brewster Buffalo in 1:32 scale

This photo-etched set from the maker Brengun replaces the landing flaps of a model of the American Brewster Buffalo fighter. Flaps are among the parts where the difference between plastic and photo-etched metal shows most: a real flap is thin sheet with a lightening structure, whereas in an injection mold it tends to become a compact piece of plastic many times the thickness. Photo-etched metal returns it to a real thickness and offers a view into its inside. The package holds the accessory alone; the model itself has to be obtained separately in 1:32 scale.

The real subject

The Brewster Buffalo was a single-seat fighter with a radial engine, a cantilever all-metal wing and retractable landing gear, which entered service at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. It was operated by the US Navy and by the air forces of several other countries, and it was committed to combat in the Pacific and in northern Europe as well. Its stocky barrel-shaped fuselage gave it a characteristic silhouette by which you will recognize it even from a distance.

How to work the flaps in

Count on the original plastic flaps being cut out of the wing. Work slowly, with a thin saw and a scalpel, and fine-tune the opening gradually with a file according to a dry fit. Bend the photo-etched parts in a bending tool in small steps and dispense super glue onto the joints with the tip of a wire. Apply a base coat to the metal before painting. Open flaps reveal the inside of the wing, so give it the same care as a cockpit: a color matching the interior, a dark wash into the ribs and fine scuffing on the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American fighters in the large 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want to build a model with the flaps lowered
  • More experienced builders who do not mind cutting into a wing
  • Collectors who watch for a real thickness of sheet metal parts

The set is an accessory, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The original plastic flaps are cut out of the wing and replaced with the photo-etched parts. Work slowly, with a thin saw and with dry fits.

It is not. This is an accessory; the injected Buffalo kit in 1:32 scale has to be obtained separately.

A real flap is thin sheet with an internal structure. An injection mold cannot cast it in a real thickness, so the plastic part looks disproportionately massive.

Lowered flaps reveal the inside of the wing, so paint it in an interior shade and bring it out with a wash. Do not forget to apply a base coat to bare metal.
