A figure of an airman from the period of 1914 to 1918 in the large 1:32 scale from the brand Black Dog. This is the first of the pair of stances the manufacturer offers for this subject, and it is aimed at builds of biplanes with an open cockpit.
The cockpits were open and unheated, so an airman had to withstand the frost even in summer. He therefore wore a long leather coat with a fur collar, a flying helmet and large goggles, which kept out the stream of air and the splashing oil. The rotary engines of the machines of the time sprayed lubricant into the whole space behind them, so the clothing of airmen tended to show it at first glance. This detail matters more for a figure than any other.
Do not do the leather coat in a single color. Break the basic brown down into darker folds and lighter taut places and add a few irregular darker smears, which will suggest soaked-in oil. The fur on the collar, on the contrary, should be built up with a dry brush from below, so that the hairs come across as fluffy. The goggles deserve a clear glossy surface and dark surroundings, because it is exactly they that are the visual center of the whole figure. Anyone who dares can suggest a faint reflection of the sky in the lenses with one stroke of a light tone.
