About product

Eduard LööK instrument panel 1:32 for the Curtiss Hawk 81-A2

A detailing accessory in 1:32 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, meant for the plastic kit of the Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 fighter. It is neither a kit nor a photo-etched frame, but a finished instrument panel in color that replaces the plastic or decal part in the cockpit of a model. The difference from an ordinary etching lies in the relief: the panel has real depth, the instruments stand proud and the dials carry a legible print. Fitting it takes a few minutes and calls for no painting, so it is the quickest way to lift the most closely watched place in a cockpit. In the large 1:32 scale the cockpit is openly in view, and a flat plastic part is at its most conspicuous there.

The real subject

The Hawk 81-A2 is the export designation of an early series of the Curtiss P-40 fighter with a liquid-cooled piston engine and the characteristic deep radiator under the nose. It was a single-seat all-metal fighter with a low-set wing and retractable landing gear. Aircraft of this series were delivered outside the United States, where the designation Tomahawk was used for comparable versions. The cockpit has the classic period layout with a large area of instruments in front of the pilot.

Building and painting tips

First compare the finished part with the plastic panel from the kit and sand the plastic down to the thickness needed, so that the panel sits in the right position and does not keep the fuselage from closing. It is glued with a drop of cyanoacrylate, ideally the gel type because of its longer open time. Do not clean the printed color with alcohol or thinner. The dials can be brought out with a spot of clear gloss varnish, which imitates the glass covers. Painting and weathering the surrounding cockpit walls before fitting the panel is advisable, so that no wash or pigment lands on the finished part. In a large scale it pays to finish the whole cockpit and only then close the fuselage.

Who the accessory is for

  • Modelers who want a finished instrument panel in color without painting and masking.
  • Builders of large models in 1:32 scale, where the cockpit is clearly visible.
  • Those who are not happy with a flat decal or a coarsely engraved plastic part.
  • Modelers who want to lift the detail quickly and in one place, without a whole photo-etched set.

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
