Tamiya 1:32 F-51D Mustang Korean War is a top-class plastic kit of the famous American fighter in the version used in the Korean War, when the Mustangs flew above all against ground targets.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded kit from the manufacturer Tamiya in 1:32 scale, from the range that stands among the best in the field. The model is 308 mm long with a span of 354 mm. The package offers a faithfully shaped airframe with suggested rivets and panel lines, a detailed Packard Merlin V-1650 engine with intercooler, supercharger and carburetor, removable engine cowlings, a richly equipped cockpit, photo-etched parts (the seat belts among them), metal shafts for a movable rudder and elevators, painting masks, a pilot figure in a period helmet, a stand for display in flight and, optionally, retracted or extended landing gear. In the armament you will find six HVAR rockets, bombs and two types of drop tank, which in the Korean War were improvised as napalm containers. Three marking options are included.
Mind the designation: F-51D is not a misprint. In 1948 the US Air Force redesignated fighters from the letter P (Pursuit) to F (Fighter), and so the P-51D became the F-51D. It is the same aircraft, only with a new designation under the postwar system. The change of role, though, is fundamental. Where in the Second World War the Mustang was above all an escort fighter for long-range bombers, in Korea from 1950 the fight for air superiority already belonged to jets. The piston-engined Mustang therefore served mainly as a ground-attack aircraft against ground targets: support for its own troops, attacks with rockets, bombs and napalm on columns, bridges and positions. Its range and load-carrying suited it for that, but it paid dearly, because the liquid-cooled Merlin engine is very vulnerable to fire from the ground. It is exactly this role that sets the Korean edition apart from the classic Mustang kits of the Second World War.
Tamiya is famous for precise fit, so you can concentrate on the surface and the detail. Finish and paint the cockpit and the engine completely before you close the fuselage and fit the cowlings; with removable cowlings the engine will be visible, so it deserves a wash and a dry brush. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which runs into the seam by capillary action and does not clog the detail; the masks supplied make the canopy glazing easier. What is crucial on a Mustang is a smooth, natural metal surface: spray the base carefully, sand it down and only then lay the metallic on, because every scratch is emphasized under it. Stir the metallic through thoroughly (the pigment settles to the bottom) and apply it at the end, because it is hard to mask. Use a gloss clear coat before the decals and take the finish back to flat locally after them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
