This set from the Quinta Studio brand is a printed color interior on decal paper for a large-scale model of the F/A-18C carrier multirole aircraft in its early production guise. It is neither a kit nor resin parts: a thin layer with relief and a finished color print is transferred onto the plastic cockpit parts just like a decal. The model thus gets legible dials, lettering and panel texture without photo-etched parts and without the laborious painting of fine details by hand. The target kit is Academy.
The F/A-18C is the single-seat version of a carrier aircraft that combines the fighter and attack roles. In 1:32 scale the cockpit is large and with the canopy open it forms the most exposed place of the whole model, so the difference between bare plastic and a well-worked interior shows here more than in any other common scale. The reference to the early production guise points to the older cockpit fit, which differs from the later upgrades. Which particular areas the sheet covers is stated on the box of the set.
The procedure is the same as with a decal, only with more patience. The base has to be smooth and glossy, so degrease the parts and clear them of dust. Soak a cut-out segment in lukewarm water only briefly, move it into place with a brush and draw the excess water off. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as their chemicals attack the printed resin and ruin the element; and never press the layer with a finger before it dries. In convex places light warming and pressure from a cotton bud will help. Try the application on an offcut of the sheet first and let the finished interior dry out thoroughly before you close the cockpit up.
This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The base Academy kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
