About product

Quinta Studio 1:32 F/A-18D Early 3D interior decals

A set of three-dimensional (3D) decals for the interior of the two-seat Hornet in the early configuration, 1:32 scale. The elements are printed and colored in production, they have a raised relief of buttons, switches and display bezels, and they are applied on decal paper directly onto the cockpit parts. Against brush painting you gain legible labels and a uniform look of the panels; against flat photo-etch you also gain depth. In the name the set is marked as the smaller version, so it covers a narrower selection of surfaces than the full version. The decals are shaped for the parts of the Academy kit.

The real subject

The F/A-18D is the two-seat combat version of the Hornet, in which the rear cockpit serves a second crew member operating the aircraft systems. With the US Marine Corps it was used for missions in poor conditions. The Early attribute in the name refers to the early configuration of the cockpit equipment, which differs from the later state in the layout of the panels, and that is exactly why the set exists in several versions.

Application tips

The 3D decals differ from ordinary wet decals, but they do need water: the element is immersed for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slid off the backing decal paper. It has no adhesive layer of its own and holds on gloss varnish, so give the surface a coat of gloss varnish first; a flat surface is a mistake. Do not use a decal softener or setter at all, their chemistry will attack the printed resin. Follow the instructions supplied with the set. In general the surface should be degreased and dry, the elements are laid down with tweezers and it is sensible to test the fit dry. With a two-seat cockpit, plan the order of work in advance so that you do not touch the finished front section while fitting the rear one. A light flattening coat at the end helps so that the interior does not look unevenly glossy.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the two-seat Hornet in 1:32 with open cockpits
  • Modelers who want legible panels without painting tiny elements
  • Those who prefer three-dimensional detail to flat photo-etch
  • More experienced modelers used to working with tweezers in a small space

This is not an aircraft model but an add-on set for the interior. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The set is intended for the interior of the two-seat aircraft. Check the exact list of parts on the box of the set.

Yes. The element is immersed for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slid off the backing decal paper onto gloss varnish, because it has no adhesive layer of its own. Do not use a decal softener or setter at all, it would attack the printed resin. You will find the procedure in the instructions for the set.

It refers to the early configuration of the cockpit equipment. Later machines have a different panel layout, which is why the manufacturer offers more versions of the set.

No. It is only a set of interior decals; the model has to be obtained separately.

It is intended for the Academy kit.
