The Fiat CR.42 was an Italian single-seat fighter biplane from the end of the 1930s. It entered service at a time when biplanes were already giving way to all-metal monoplanes, and yet it was built in large numbers and saw combat on several fronts of the Second World War. Its striking features are the pair of lifting surfaces braced with struts, the fixed landing gear and the open pilot's cabin on the early machines.

Photo-etch allows a thickness that cannot be reached on a plastic part, so elements such as buckles, handles, grilles or thin sheets look more convincing in scale. The exact contents of the fret and the kit the set is cut for are given in the manufacturer's instructions; check which model you want to use it on before ordering.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp blade on a hard surface, do not break them out. A bent or stretched part is hard to straighten. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two blades, always along the whole length of the edge at once. They are attached with super glue applied in a tiny amount, for example with the tip of a pin. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and use a primer meant for metal, or the paint will rub off during handling.
It suits modelers who find the thickness of plastic parts distracting in a large scale and want to replace it with metal in the visible places. Working with photo-etch calls for fine tools and patience, but nothing stops a beginner from starting with a few larger parts and only then taking on the smallest elements.
