A figure of an airman intended for the surroundings of North Africa, in the large 1:32 scale from the brand Black Dog. It differs from the European stances of the same brand above all in its dress: in the desert lighter and looser clothing was worn, rounded out with headgear against the sun.
African airfields were field grounds in the middle of sand and stones, with no hard surfaces and no shade. The dust got in everywhere, the engines overheated and the colors of the hardware faded quickly. These surroundings set the palette of the figure too: lighter fabric, a tanned face, plenty of highlights and only few deep shadows, because the harsh midday sun suppresses shadows.
Paint the figure lighter than would seem right - the sun washes the tones out. Apply the dust from the bottom upward, so that it is strongest on the boots and the calves and almost absent on the shoulders. On the base, fine sand mixed with a binder has proved itself, sprinkled once dry with pigment in a similar shade to the dust on the figure. A unifying tone on both parts of the scene is what joins the figure with the base into a single whole. Keep the sharp edges of shadows only under the chin and under the brim of the headgear.
