The Ilyushin Il-2 carried a forward fuselage made from an armored tub into which the engine, the tank and the pilot's seat were built. The early single-seat machines suffered losses to German fighters from behind, though, so a place for a gunner with a flexible machine gun returned behind the pilot. This two-seat modification gave the aircraft its final and best-known form.
The front pane on this type is not ordinary glazing but a thick block of laminated armored glass seated in a massive metal frame. In a large scale the part is noticeably thick and its side wall is visible, so the mask must not end at the edge but has to follow the line of the frame with that thickness in mind. Immediately behind it comes the sliding section with denser framing and then a completely different world: the gunner's station is open and its hoop is protected only by a low fairing.
The set has the richest contents among comparable items. Four national insignia masks cover the red stars in the usual positions, and on top of that there are decals in the box, which supplement the sprayed markings with elements that cannot be made with a stencil, typically inscriptions and tactical numbers. The combination of the two is advantageous for machines with a rough field finish: the stars arise in paint, the small texts come from the sheet.
With a thick armored block it is recommended to spray the frame in a dark shade first and only then the whole aircraft. The side wall of the part thus stays uniform in color even where the top coat does not reach.
