1:32 Intake guards RAF (air-intake meshes)

Photo-etched meshes in front of the air intakes for British aircraft in 1:32 scale are an accessory to a kit you have already bought, not an airplane model. A fine photo-etched mesh replaces a blind plastic opening with a faithful debris mesh.

About product

Photo-etched meshes in front of the air intakes, British aircraft 1:32

A supplementary set from the Czech maker Brengun for models of British aircraft in 1:32 scale. It is not a kit: the package holds photo-etched sheet with the debris meshes that were fitted on the real subject in front of the air intakes, so that dirt from grass and field airfields did not get into the intake.

Why an intake is solved with photo-etched metal

On a model an air intake is a dark opening into which everyone who picks the model up looks. Injected plastic can only suggest the outline here, because a mold will not create a real mesh with openings on the order of tenths of a millimeter. Photo-etching, on the other hand, comes about by chemically etching sheet away, so the mesh is genuinely cut right through: light passes through it and the opening stops looking like a blind hole. In 1:32 scale this difference is especially visible, because the model is large and details do not hide.

Tips for working it

Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp blade on a hard surface. A mesh often has to be adapted to the curved shape of an intake: form the sheet slowly over a round rod or a drill bit of a suitable diameter, pressing gradually and over the whole area so that no kink arises. Anneal a harder piece briefly over a flame and it will form easily once it has cooled. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing. It proves its worth to paint the inside of the duct matte black before fitting the mesh, so that the space behind it looks deep. It is glued with super glue in minute drops applied with a pin, and painted exclusively over a primer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British aircraft in the large 1:32 scale.
  • Modelers who are bothered by empty and flat air intakes.
  • Those who already have experience of bending and gluing photo-etched parts.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a kit. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Models of British aircraft in 1:32 scale that have a debris mesh in front of the air intake. The name does not state the particular type of airplane, so compare the shape of the intake on your own model before buying.

Form it gradually over a cylindrical support, for example a drill bit of a suitable diameter. Spread the pressure over the whole area so that no sharp kink arises.

Yes, degrease it with alcohol and spray on a primer. Without that the paint does not hold on the smooth metal and is rubbed off during handling.

Paint the inside of the duct matte black or a very dark gray before fitting the mesh. The space behind the mesh then looks optically deeper.
