1:32 J2M2 Raiden In and Out: a Dead Design masking set for spraying the canopy frames from the inner as well as the outer side.
Responsibility details are not available.
This variant of the Dead Design set differs from the basic one in what the name gives: it covers the canopy framing not only from outside but from inside too. The inner frames can therefore be sprayed with the cockpit color and the outer ones with camouflage, without masking anything off by hand. The extra work is worth the effort the moment someone looks at the cockpit from close up.
Everybody peers into the glazing of a model in a large scale. A frame painted only from outside gives the shortcut away at once: bare clear plastic shows through the pane, or an outer shade that does not belong on the cockpit structure. Sprayed inner frames, by contrast, read as a real frame skeleton, above all on a model with the sliding part of the canopy slid back.
The Raiden was created as an interceptor for the Imperial Japanese Navy, built for a steep climb against raiding formations. The Model 11 version had a low-set cockpit that pilots criticized for a long time because of the view; the many-framed glazing, which takes a whole evening to fight by hand, follows from exactly that. The fuselage, moreover, has a markedly humped spine where the cockpit sits, so the canopy seats onto it along a curve and straight tape will never settle on that curve without creases.
