About product

Resin Mark 82 bombs with the BSU-86 retarder unit in 1:32 scale

A set of four pieces, an accessory for hanging under pylons, not a kit of an aircraft. The tail unit is what is decisive here. Opened-out retarding fins are a large, thin and intricate matter in 1:32 scale. Injection-molded plastic is necessarily thicker out of the mold, its edges are rounded and the marks left by the ejector pins sit exactly where it is harder to reach. A resin casting will carry a far finer thickness and sharper edges, which is exactly what you will notice first on a finished model.

The real subject

The Mark 82 is an American low-drag bomb of the Mk 80 series in the weight class of around 500 pounds. The BSU-86 is a second-generation retarding tail unit, the successor to the older Mk.15. It fulfills the same task, that is to slow the bomb down after release from a low altitude, but it differs in design and proportions. On a model the two generations cannot be interchanged, therefore, even though from a distance they look similar.

What awaits you during assembly

The most sensitive part is separating the thin fins from the casting block. Work with a fine-toothed saw, not with cutters, and cut away in small pieces. Wash the parts beforehand in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry thoroughly. Do the sanding wet and with protection for your airways. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and an activator in narrow gaps will speed the work up, but it leaves a white bloom, so use it sparingly. It is good to attach the finished bomb to the pylon with a wire pin, as the butt of the joint alone will not hold the resin.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of modern combat aircraft in a large scale.
  • Modelers who are bothered by thick and rounded retarding fins from the box.
  • More experienced builders with experience of thin resin parts.

There are several sets with Mark 82 bombs and they differ in the form of the tail unit and in the surface of the casing. The exact designation tells them apart, so check that along with the scale.

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

FAQ

The BSU-86 is a second-generation retarder unit. Its task is the same, but it differs from the older Mk.15 in design and proportions and is recognizable on a model.

With a fine-toothed saw, in small pieces. Cutters break resin and a thin fin will crack.

By the name, four pieces.

Yes, cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for plastic does not work on resin.
