A set of masks for a large model of the early Curtiss P-40 version. The cut covers the heavily framed panes in both layers and adds three patterns for the national insignia plus accompanying decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Tomahawk had a cockpit assembled from flat panes in a dense frame, and that is precisely what makes it rewarding to mask. Through the side windows you look into the fuselage at the tube frame, at the armor plate behind the seat back and at the cover of the fuselage gun ammunition boxes. That much glazing means that the inner face of the frame will appear in every photograph of the finished model.
The box therefore handles both faces of the canopy at once. Inside the cockpit the frames carried the interior color, outside desert or European camouflage, and the boundary between them runs exactly along the outline of the pane. It is possible to mask only one side, but the result then looks as if the frame were showing through in a foreign color.
In the envelope lies a cut for the framed window panes divided into two layers, one for the view from outside and the other for the view from the cockpit. With them go three patterns for the national insignia, so that both the circular roundel and the American star can be sprayed, and accompanying decals for inscriptions that cannot be done with a stencil. The cuts follow the shape of the canopy as the plastic part has it in a large scale.
A large scale forgives little. On a framed cockpit, cutting masking tape by hand is the most protracted job of the whole build. Pre-cut film shortens this part to a few minutes and, above all, evens out the width of every bar, which with hand-cut strips never quite works out.
Degrease the glazing before applying the film and press it down with a wooden stick so that no bubble is left in the corners. Direct the spray perpendicular to the surface, not along the edge of the frame.
