1:35 Gate III

Gate III. 1:35 from Vertigo Miniatures — an accessory for a diorama

This item is not a kit of a vehicle or a model in its own right but a scenic item for a diorama or a vignette in 1:35 scale. The number III. marks one particular design in the numbered range of gates; check the look of this design on the box.

What the accessory is for

A gate is a landmark in a scene. It divides the area into an accessible and an inaccessible part, offers a natural frame for a figure or the front of a vehicle, and keeps a wall from reading as a bare backdrop. For the diorama builder it is also a saving of work — a more complicated architectural item would take a long time to build from sections and sheet. In 1:35 scale the gate sits well with ordinary vehicles, figures, paving and vegetation of the same size.

Tips for fitting and painting

Start with a dry run: mark the opening in the wall out from the part, not the other way around. Watch the vertical and the way the bottom edge sits on the terrain — a gate sunk half a millimeter into the ground looks better than a gate that seems to hover above the base. Clean and degrease the surface before painting, and level any flash or casting remains with a file. Choose the glue according to the material of the part and of the groundwork. In terms of color, work from a base coat through an overall tone to a dark wash, which brings out the texture, and finish with a dry brush on the edges. Apply dust and mud from the bottom upwards, most of all at the foot and in the corners.
