A masking set for the landing gear bays of the P-47D Thunderbolt fighter in 1:32 scale. A painting aid, not parts to build.
Responsibility details are not available.
An aid for covering the main landing gear bays of this American fighter in the large scale. At this size the landing gear bays are so extensive that sticking tape on by hand takes more time than the painting itself.
The Republic P-47D was the peak of Thunderbolt development and at the same time one of the most rugged aircraft of its day. The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine worked with a turbocharger housed right at the rear of the fuselage, which called for massive ducting and gave the machine its characteristic bulky shape. The razorback versions and the later form with a bubble canopy differed in the view to the rear, but they shared the eight heavy machine guns in the wing and the ability to bring a pilot home even after hits that would have given another type no chance. The main landing gear retracted inward and shortened telescopically as it did so, in order to fit inside the wing.
American factories sprayed the inner surfaces with a protective coat based on zinc chromate, which ranged from yellow to a greenish tone. Lay it over the whole area first, let it dry, close the area off and only then carry on with the aluminum or the olive color of the upper surfaces.
