Responsibility details are not available.
A figure of a Royal Naval Air Service mechanic with a metal can in 1:32 scale by Copper State Models. It is a stand-alone figure for aircraft models and for airfield dioramas, not an aircraft kit. It is precisely the ground crew that gives a static aircraft model action and scale.
The Royal Naval Air Service, RNAS for short, was the aviation branch of the Royal Navy. It was formed in 1914 and on 1 April 1918 it merged with the Royal Flying Corps into the newly created Royal Air Force. The period the figure belongs to is thus unambiguously set: these are the years of the First World War, which also matches the focus of the whole range from this manufacturer. The work of ground crew on an airfield of the period involved topping up fuel and oil, swinging the propeller when starting the engine, repairs to the fabric covering and routine maintenance between flights.
The working clothing of ground crew is a rewarding subject: it will take oil stains, dulled elbows and an uneven shade, so glazes and a dry brush can be put to good use. Start with the base tone, add shadows and highlights and finally add the small soiling that gives a figure credibility. It is a good idea to paint the can separately, so that it can be shaded inside and out. When placing it in a scene, check that the figure seats properly on the terrain and match the overall colors with the aircraft model, so that the figure and the machine do not read as two different builds.
