This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale offers a large biplane on which the details of the engine, the cockpit and the rigging come out well. Roden has long specialized in aircraft of the First World War, and this box is devoted to the single-seat conversion known as the Comic. The difference against the ordinary two-seat Strutter is fundamental, so buy the box for exactly that reason.
The Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter was a British two-seat biplane with a rotary engine, used as a reconnaissance and bombing machine, and it was among the first British aircraft with a synchronized machine gun. The designation came from the unusual arrangement of short and long struts carrying the upper wing. The conversion called the Comic was created for night defense against raids: the second seat disappeared, the pilot's position moved back behind the upper wing and the armament was moved onto the upper wing so that the pilot could fire upward at a target above him without being dazzled by his own gunfire.
On a biplane the order of work is what decides. Finish and paint the cockpit and the engine first, and only then close the fuselage. Glue the struts after a dry fit so that the upper wing sits parallel, and help yourself with a simple wooden jig. Spray the fabric surfaces in thin coats, because in 1:32 scale every transition shows. Do the rigging only after the clear coat and the decals; a flexible thread tensioned between drilled holes works well. A rotary engine looks better with a dark wash and lightly polished edges than with a markedly glossy paint.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
