About product

Glazing masks Spitfire Mk.I/II 1:32 - inside and outside

A set of masks for the frame of the cabin of a model of the Spitfire Mk.I or Mk.II in 1:32 scale in the form for both sides of the glazing. Against an ordinary outer set it also contains masks for the inner side, thanks to which the frame can be sprayed in the interior color from the inside. The set is cut for a Hasegawa kit.

What masking both ways deals with

A real aircraft has the frame of its cabin in the interior color on the inside and in the airframe color on the outside. When the frame is sprayed only from the outside, clear plastic shows through into the cabin, and seen from above it is apparent that the canopy is actually only a transparent shell. Double-sided masks remove this difference - on the inside you get the interior shade, on the outside the camouflage, and between them clear glass remains. It is noticeable mainly when a model is built with the canopy slid back, where the inside of the frame is right in front of the eye.

The real subject

The early Spitfires had a cabin with several fields of glazing and with a fairly dense network of frames. That is exactly why the difference between the inner and the outer color of the frame shows more strongly on them than on types with a simple canopy, where only a few edges are masked.

Usage tips

Proceed step by step: stick the inner masks on, spray the interior shade, let it cure and only then deal with the outer side. Before you start on the outer spraying, check whether the inner masks have not come loose anywhere - once the cabin is glued up you can no longer reach them. Apply the paint thinly; a thick coat increases the thickness of the frame, and in a large scale that shows. Take the inner masks off first, while the part is still freely accessible.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the cabin with the canopy slid back
  • Builders who are bothered by a clear frame showing through in the interior
  • Owners of the corresponding Hasegawa kit
  • Those who want to carry the cabin through in detail without photo-etched parts

FAQ

It contains masks for the inner side of the glass as well, so you can spray the frame in the interior color from the inside. The basic set deals only with the outer side.

The effect is most visible with the canopy slid back, but even with a closed cabin the clear frame showing through disappears.

First the inner side in the interior shade, and after it has cured the outer side in the airframe color.
