Multi-part masks and registration

When the resulting shape is made up of more than one color, it is handled with masks in layers: the first shade is sprayed, the part that is to stay in the first color is covered over, and you move on. The key is not to hurry between layers. Every shade must be dry before you lay the next mask onto it, otherwise the paint will lift. When a set contains both positive and negative parts of the same shape, keep the waste parts of the sheet as well - they often come in useful as additional covering.

Practical advice

• Work in order from lighter shades to darker ones, as that covers better.
• Press the edge of the mask down and spray the first coat of paint lightly, only as a seal against bleed.
• Do not peel all the masks off at once if you are still going to spray another color nearby.
• Unify the finished surface with a clear coat to match the type of paint used.
