The last of the pair of five-spoke sets that Armory offers for the famous British fighter, this time in a medium size. The combination of the diamond grain on the tire and a hub with five arms corresponds to the more robust version that the machine needed as it gained weight. The contact patch is modeled as compressed.
In less than a decade the Spitfire went through a transformation without parallel among the fighters of its time: from the slim machine with the twelve-cylinder engine of the first series to the stocky type with a symmetrical pair of radiators under the wings and a massive propeller. With every further horsepower the load on the running gear grew as well, so the wheels could not help changing too. A stronger tire with a pronounced grain and a hub with a higher number of arms are therefore typical of the closing phases of the type's career and of its naval offshoot.
Do not flood the diamond grain with paint that is too thin, as otherwise the pattern fills in and disappears. The better way is to apply the dark tone deliberately and wipe the excess off. Set the hub apart with a lighter shade and unify the sheen with a matte varnish, so that the rubber does not stay glossier than the surrounding areas of the model.
