About product

The largest single-engine carrier aircraft of the war

The Grumman Avenger was an exceptionally bulky machine for the deck of an aircraft carrier. A bomb bay able to take a torpedo fitted into the fuselage, an electrically powered gun turret sat above the cockpit and below it there was a lighter weapon for a gunner in the lower position. The wings folded back along the fuselage by a mechanism patented by Grumman, which made it possible to fit markedly more aircraft on the deck. The sub-version with the letter C brought the most visible change in armament: the small-caliber machine gun in the cowling disappeared and two heavy weapons of 12.7 mm caliber were added in the wing instead.

Box contents

Two films for the glazing, three sets of national insignia and two turned metal muzzles for the heavy wing machine guns.

The wing weapons and symmetry

The muzzles of these weapons project from the leading edge and are in view all the time on a model, because the wing is wide and the viewer looks down on it. All the more does it hit the eye when one barrel projects a little further than the other. The metal parts solve that problem by leaving the depth of insertion up to you: hold both pieces together, shorten them to the same length and pack one side while gluing so that they project equally.

Why masking is easier on this machine

The glazing of the Avenger is long, divided into many panes, and the frame above the pilot's head turns in several directions. Cutting tape for that means an hour of work with an uncertain result, whereas a shaped film fits the first time. It pays to apply it before the fuselage is glued, while the part is still loose and can be turned against the light.

The finish

In the second half of the war carrier aircraft wore a three-tone blue-gray scheme with white undersides, against which the national insignia stand out very strongly.

FAQ

The pair of heavy machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber which this sub-version received in the wing.

The same depth of insertion for both parts. The wing is wide and unequally projecting barrels are noticeable at once from above.

The cockpit was long and carried a gun turret above it, so masking with tape would be slow. Shaped films shorten the work markedly.

Two glazing masks are stated here without a closer breakdown, so check the extent by dry-fitting before the build.
