The Panavia Tornado came about as a joint work of Britain, Germany and Italy, and the letters IDS define the original mission: to penetrate low over the terrain to the target and strike it in any weather. A variable geometry wing changing the sweep served that, along with a terrain-following radar and a pair of engines with afterburning. The Luftwaffe and the Marineflieger committed it among other things to attacks on airfields and, in the coastal version, against ships with Kormoran missiles. The work was divided between a pair of men sitting one behind the other, with the rear man working the radar and the weapon systems.
This product fills both seats with cut-outs printed in color with raised elements. Small components produced by three-dimensional printing are added as well, and they resolve the places where a mere layer on paper would look flat. The designation for the reduced version means that the extent is more restrained than with the complete set and concentrates on what is most visible.
A dry test will suggest how much material to trim off. Paint the plastic in a dark shade, release the cut-out in water and offer it up. Do not use a softener or a fixer, as they would attack the printed resin, and a final matte varnish will unify the surface. The model of the aircraft has to be bought separately.
Flight below the limit of radar cover was a bold way of fighting by the standards of the day and it placed considerable demands on both people seated aboard. Automatic equipment copying the terrain led the machine even at night and in cloud, but the crew had to trust the system without reservation. At a large scale it makes sense to open the glazing up and let the instruments be seen, otherwise the most laborious part of the build would stay hidden.
