Pre-cut painting masks in 1:32 scale for the anniversary finish of the US Air Force demonstration F-16C from the 2024 season.
Responsibility details are not available.
The YF-16 prototype first lifted off the runway in 1974, and the US Air Force marked the fiftieth birthday of its most widespread fighter properly: the single-seat demonstration F-16C was given a commemorative finish for the 2024 season, in which it toured the air shows. A solo Viper display tends to be the loudest item of a meeting, because it alternates a vertical climb, turns at high g-load and a slow pass with the landing gear down.
The commemorative artwork differs from the gray line camouflage in long shaped bands that run across the wing, the fin and the sides of the air intake. Such areas give decals trouble: the carrier film breaks on the rounded spine and starts to silver around the rivets. Paint applied through a mask does not have this failing, because it behaves just like the surrounding varnish and takes flattening as well as subsequent accentuation of the panel joints.
The sheets are die-cut to their final shape, so they are simply peeled off the backing and laid onto the finished paintwork. It proves best to go from the lightest tone to the darkest and to take the film off before the paint has fully cured, so that the edge stays sharp.
In 1:32 scale a Viper airframe is about forty-seven centimeters long, so every inaccuracy in an outline shows in the result at once. Cutouts for framing the clear canopy and for the wheel discs are included as well. Before the first spray it is advisable to degrease the surface, or the film will not hold on greasy varnish. The modeler obtains the plastic basis for the build separately.
