A figure accessory in 1:35 scale from Black Dog. The name brings two subjects together: a member of the American special forces on horseback and an Afghan fighter. It is a subject that appears only rarely in the modeling range.
A rider from the special forces beside a local fighter refers to the first phase of operations in Afghanistan at the turn of 2001 and 2002. Small teams then worked alongside local units, and in mountain terrain where there were no roads they moved on horseback, a combination that entered military history precisely for its incongruity. For a display case it is a rewarding subject, because a mounted figure and modern equipment stand side by side in one composition and the viewer notices the contradiction at once.
A horse's coat is painted differently from cloth: work with smooth transitions, concentrate the sheen on the muscular areas and paint the mane and the tail in strokes following the lie of the hair. On the figures, emphasize the difference between the dusty modern equipment and the soft layered clothing of the local fighter. A leather harness needs a different sheen from textile, and the metal of the weapons another again. Finally unify the whole scene with fine dust applied from the feet upwards, so that the figures belong together and to the base.
