Figures in 1:48 scale tend to be an accessory to a model rather than the main character, and yet it is they that determine whether a scene is alive. The weak point tends to be the head: the face is lost and all the figures have the same headgear and the same gaze. An interchangeable head puts that right faster than remodeling the whole figure. The set brings heads with the M40 field cap, that is with the soft headgear worn in the field and out of combat alike.
Most often the heads find a use with crews standing or sitting by a machine: one looks upward, the second to one side, the third has the cap set back on the head. Turning the heads differently gives a group the impression of a conversation without your having to change the stance of the bodies.
Work over a shallow dish, as parts of this size are easily lost. Cut the original head off at the level of the collar, level the surface out and fit the new head onto a short pin of thin wire, which will strengthen the joint. Cut the excess material away a little way from the part, sand the rest off and wash the part and degrease it; choose the glue according to the material of the parts. Do not paint the face in this scale eye by eye: lay down the base tone of the skin, draw the eye sockets and the shadow under the cap out with a dark wash, and suggest the nose, the forehead and the chin with light. The eye is enough as a faint dark line, otherwise the figure will stare wide-eyed.
