A figure of a British officer from the campaign in France in the spring of 1940, 1:35 scale, made by Dynamo-Models. The number one in the name sets this pose apart from the second command figure of the same line, which can be placed beside it.
The British command uniform of the day consisted of a peaked cap, a service tunic with an open collar and a shirt and tie, riding breeches and high laced boots with leather gaiters. The equipment included a leather holster, a map case and often only a swagger stick instead of a long weapon. The stance of the figure is calm and upright, which is exactly what a scene lacks if everyone in it is in motion. That is why command figures come into their own even in a static display scene.
Officers' cloth tended to be finer and lighter than other ranks' serge, so choose a shade one step warmer. Apply the shadows into the folds with thinned paint in small steps rather than all at once. Build the leather parts separately so that they stand out against the cloth by their sheen. The high boots and the gaiters have a different texture from the tunic, so do not coat them with the same matte varnish as the cloth. Leave the head until last and finish the face only once the figure is seated on its base.
