Commanders over a spread-out map make a rewarding tableau: they give a diorama a story without a single shot and at the same time explain why a vehicle or a motorcycle is standing nearby. A crate, a lowered hood or a low wall as a support under the map is enough and the scene holds together by itself. The tableau also needs no great amount of terrain; it fits onto a small base and takes up no room in a display case.
Do not place the figures facing the viewer. They look natural turned toward one another with one of them pointing away from the base, because the viewer's gaze then travels on across the scene. Set the heads so that the axes of their gazes cross above the map. In color, unify the individual figures with the same dust shade on the boots and on the cuffs of the trousers. Make the map yourself from thin paper painted with a thinned beige; a printed sheet looks unnatural at this reduction.
