The set depicts a fixed round of 7.5 cm caliber for the Kw.K.40 gun and for the Stu.K.40 in assault guns, in both barrel lengths, L/43 as well as L/48. The number after the letter L gives the length of the barrel in multiples of the caliber, not the caliber. The Kw.K.40 was carried by Panzer IV medium tanks from the F2 version onward, and the Stu.K.40 by the StuG III and StuG IV assault guns.
The Panzergranatpatrone 40 was a sub-caliber projectile: the penetrating core of hard metal was much narrower than the caliber and was carried by a light body that gave it its shape and guidance in the barrel. The lower weight meant a high muzzle velocity and markedly better penetrating power at short range, but at longer range the projectile quickly lost both velocity and effect. It was made only in limited numbers, because the raw materials for the core were in short supply, and crews therefore saved it for the hardest targets.
Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little away from the part and carefully sand the rest off; the tip of the projectile is slender and easily shortened. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. On German ammunition the color coding of projectiles differed according to the type of filling and the period, so work from a period photograph or from the manufacturer's instructions; those are also a guide to the choice of glue, because that depends on the material of the parts.
It suits building an interior with open stowage bins and dioramas where you want to show that a crew had only a few rounds of this ammunition to hand among the other types. Paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
