A set of resin figures in 1:35 scale from Rado Miniatures. According to the name it represents the crew of the German medium tank Panther of 1944; the word Jabo in the name is a period abbreviation for a fighter-bomber and hints at the subject of the scene. It is not a tank kit but a set of figures to be fitted to a vehicle model or into a diorama in the same scale. The plural in the name corresponds to a multi-figure set.
Crew figures differ from infantry in one fundamental way: they are not standing on the ground but sitting on or leaning against the vehicle, so they are firmly tied to the particular shape of a hatch, the turret or the hull. That has two consequences. First, they have to be reckoned with before you close the model and paint it, because the position has to be tried dry and sometimes the seating face has to be adjusted slightly. Second, it is the crew that decides whether a tank in a display case looks like a technical exhibit or like a machine on the move. A figure leaning out of a hatch gives a model scale as well as the direction in which the scene is looking. The tankers' clothing differs from the infantry pattern in cut and in practical coloring, which makes a welcome change in painting.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. First seat the figures dry in the hatches and check that no gap shows between the body and the edge of the opening; fill any play with a thin strip of plastic or putty. Paint them separately from the model and fit the finished figures only at the end with super glue. Half figures protruding from a hatch do not have to be finished below the edge of the opening, but leave yourself the option of taking them out later. Tie the uniforms in with the vehicle using a fine layer of the same dust the model carries, or the crew will look like a foreign part stuck on.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted, as resin castings. The model of the vehicle, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
