An accessory set in 1:35 for the Australian ASLAV armored personnel carrier with jute tape camouflage. An accessory for a model of the vehicle, not a model on its own.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory set for a model of the Australian ASLAV wheeled armored vehicle. The subject is jute camouflage tape, which Australian crews wound around parts of the hull, the handles, the brackets and the kit. It is one of the most characteristic features of Australian vehicles from the deployment in the Middle East, and on a model it gives away at once whose vehicles these are. The 1:35 scale is the standard for ground vehicles.
The ASLAV, or Australian Light Armoured Vehicle, is an eight-wheeled armored vehicle derived from the Canadian LAV family and the Swiss Piranha design. The Australian army introduced it in the 1990s and operated it in several forms: a reconnaissance version with a turret and an automatic cannon, a transport version and specialized command and repair versions. It was deployed in East Timor, in Iraq and in Afghanistan. The combination of a wheeled chassis, decent speed on hard roads and sufficient protection made it the backbone of Australian reconnaissance units.
Jute tape has a flat, slightly fuzzy surface, and against a smooth hull it always looks a shade warmer and lighter. It pays to paint it separately, to start with a sandy to khaki base and to bring out the texture with a dry brush. A dark wash will bring out the transitions and fine pigments will add dust. The ideal is to let the tape stand slightly apart in shade from the surrounding coat of the vehicle, or it will be lost in the final weathering.
