The eighth part of the Star Decals line on the peacekeeping forces in the Balkans brings markings in 1:35 scale for the vehicles of the Cheshire Regiment in Bosnia. The name of the set refers to the white-sprayed machines that became a visual shorthand for the British presence in the peacekeeping forces of the time.
A white finish was the standard on vehicles operating under an international mandate, meant to set the hardware apart from the machines of the warring sides at first glance. Large lettering and signs went with it, whose purpose was to be legible even at a great distance. The Cheshire Regiment served in Bosnia in the first half of the 1990s and its white tracked vehicles appeared in period footage of the central Bosnian convoys. For a modeler this theme is interesting precisely for its contrast: hardware meant for combat in an unusually light finish, on which every trace of use shows.
White is one of the most demanding shades. Spray it in several thin coats over a light base, otherwise seams and edges will show through it. Then apply the markings onto a smooth gloss varnish and even the surface out with a matte varnish. Keep the weathering restrained, but do not leave it out, because it is exactly on white that traces of dust and diesel are the most striking and a model without them looks like a toy. The procedure the manufacturer recommends is given on the packaging.
The set holds decals. The kit, the paints and the varnishes are not included in the package.
