Shattered city buildings belong among the strongest themes of the close of the war – the narrow space of a street, heaps of rubble and damaged facades change the character of a whole scene. The viewer connects it with fighting in built-up space, where equipment moves slowly and infantry holds every doorway. The set piece therefore works convincingly even with a single vehicle and a few figures.
Build the facade from the bottom up and keep checking that it is vertical – with city motifs every leaning story is noticed immediately. Plaster gains depth after a thin filter and a fine stippling of shades, as a uniform area looks unconvincing. Rubble should have several sizes of grain and a few larger fragments, otherwise it is a reminder of mere sand. Settle dust on the horizontal cornices and sills as well. Aim the lighting of the display case so that the street stays partly in shadow; the contrast of light and dark suits a city scene exceptionally well.
