A residential building gives a view a civilian dimension that equipment alone never has. The windows, the entrance and the front suggest that people lived in the street – and it is precisely this contrast that makes a military diorama interesting. The same set piece will be used for a quiet postwar view, a street scene or the placing of a civilian vehicle into a city. The house will also serve well as the back wall of a display case, in front of which the main action takes place.
First stand the front dry on a base and try the angle of view; residential buildings look best turned slightly at an angle into the display case. The plaster will benefit from uneven dirtying from the ground upward and darker streaks under the sills. Do not leave the window openings empty – a dark inside, a hint of a curtain or boards across the frame will give depth. Join the sidewalk and the curb so that the house does not stand out from the base as a separate block. The entrance door and the step in front of it deserve a shade of their own, because the eye looks for them first.
