A ground for a display in 1:35 scale from the Black Dog diorama range, this time with a bridge. A crossing is a rewarding subject, because it brings two levels of height into a scene and naturally leads the viewer's eye.
The structure divides the area into an upper and a lower part and so opens room for two separate events. Hardware can stand on top, while a channel or a hollow can be suggested below. The edges and the railings are the places where damage shows the most, so it is worth giving them time.
Stone and concrete surfaces come out best with layering: a dark wash into the joints, then several lighter passes with a dry brush. Do the water surface, if you are going to suggest it, at the very end and in thin layers. Wet edges look believable when they are noticeably darker than the dry terrain around them.
A bridge scene looks best from the side, because then both levels are readable at once. So give it a place that can be approached from behind and from the front. Lighting from above brings out the upper surface while the underside stays in shadow, and the impression of depth only benefits.
The package holds no vehicles, figures or vegetation; those are added according to the subject.
