The BTR-40 was a Soviet light wheeled armored personnel carrier with four-wheel drive, built on the chassis of the GAZ-63 truck and taken into service at the start of the 1950s. The body was open at the top, so the crew was protected from the weather only by a canvas roof stretched over hoops.
