It brings building blocks into the scene, that is material with which you can convincingly lay out a wall, a base course or the unfinished corner of a house. RT-Diorama runs the blocks as a numbered range, so the builder of a scene can choose several variants and avoid repeating the same subject over and over.
The concrete block is among the most widespread building materials of the twentieth century. It turns up from interwar farm buildings through the postwar rebuilding of cities to present-day conflicts in the Middle East, where whole residential blocks and makeshift yard walls are built from it. A real building block measures around forty centimeters in length, which works out at roughly a centimeter in 1:35 scale - so the element is large enough to read in a scene and at the same time small enough to be built up into larger wholes.
It works best when the blocks are not spread evenly. It pays to create one main grouping that carries the story of the view, and a few loose pieces beside it that lead the viewer's eye. The blocks also serve well as a difference in height: they divide the area of the base, hide the transition between the terrain and the edge and give the figures and vehicles something to be measured against. In an industrial scene they suit an extension under construction, in a wartime view a hastily built position.
