A horse lying on its side, 1:35 Dead horse lateral position, will complete a frontline or country scene. A quiet position with no bloating of the body.

A diorama part from the series by Pimp My Miniatures captures a fallen draft animal in a quiet position on its side, with the legs stretched out and with no bloating of the body. Compared with the other variant of the same subject it looks more restrained and suits scenes that take place shortly after fighting has ended.
Losses among draft animals accompanied land campaigns from the First World War to the late 1940s. Particularly affected were columns of wagons struck by an air attack or by artillery fire at crossroads. A modeler uses such a detail above all to give a scene scale and a story: between a shattered wagon and the tracks of wheels a fallen animal is a clear indicator of what happened, and it remains a matter-of-fact element of the setting.
Try working from a base brown tone through a dark wash in the grooves to light highlighting of the back and the withers. The mane and the tail will take a different shade, which divides the piece visually. On the underside of the body, which lies against the ground, dusting and mud in the tone of the surrounding ground work well. To unify it, a final matte varnish and a light wipe of pigment where it touches the road are enough.
It is supplied raw, that is, without a finish and without ground beneath it.
