The Ardennes Farm base from RT-Diorama is a diorama element for 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle but a setting: groundwork with a building into which the modeler places vehicles and figures of their own. The subject is a rural farmstead from the Ardennes region, that is a masonry farm building of the kind that made up the ordinary building of scattered farms along the forest roads in the border country of Belgium and Luxembourg.
The Ardennes are among the most frequently modeled subjects in the whole of 1:35 scale. Wooded uplands, narrow roads and isolated farms became the scene of extensive fighting in the winter of 1944 and 1945, and modelers return to this setting for the contrast between quiet rural architecture and the vehicles squeezing past it. A farmstead with a yard is not tied to one period, however: it serves just as well for a scene from the first half of the twentieth century, for a postwar view and for a civilian diorama without any military vehicles.
The gable roof and the mass of the building carry the view, so it pays to let clear space breathe around them and not to put a vehicle directly in front of the entrance. The scene works best when it has a clear foreground, a middle plane with the building and a hint that the road carries on out of the view. Try the layout out dry first and turn the base against the light, so that you know where the strongest shadows will fall. With winter subjects, allow for the fact that a white surface reflects a great deal, so the scene will take more dark mass than a summer version.
