This is not a vehicle kit but a diorama base: the foundation of a scene with an Italian farm subject in 1:35 scale. The base solves what usually takes the modeler longest to wrestle with - the ground plan, the boundaries of the scene and the relation of the building to the surface. Anyone who builds a scene from the ground up knows that a badly chosen base format spoils even superbly finished vehicles, because the model either has no room around it or, conversely, floats in emptiness.
The Italian farm is one of the most characteristic settings of the Second World War in Europe. Tight-packed buildings with tiled roofs, yards and low walls stood along the whole axis of the Italian campaign, from the Sicily landings in 1943 through Salerno and Monte Cassino to the fighting of 1945. The subject therefore suits both Allied and German vehicles of this period, paratroopers and a civilian scene alike, because a country yard went on living even between the front lines.
The base determines the composition, so start by working out where the viewer's eye will travel and where the main model will stand. It pays to leave one corner empty and fill the other with mass - the scene then has a lighter and a heavier side and does not read flat. Blending it into the surrounding terrain, vegetation and small accessories in the same scale pulls the whole thing together. The modeler chooses the vehicles and figures according to the subject.
