The Red Oak - dry leaves 1:35 set from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene contains fine laser-cut paper leaves with the characteristic lobed shape of an oak leaf, in a dry, dead color. It is not a tree and not finished vegetation but a loose leaf material. Dry oak foliage is one of the most rewarding kinds of litter for dioramas: it reads well, holds its shape and builds a naturally irregular layer on the ground. The recommended scale is 1:35.
The leaves are glued onto a wire or natural tree armature and onto a bush of seafoam, or sprinkled loose as litter along a path, at the foot of a wall, into a ditch and into the corners of a scene. The manufacturer also recommends them as an enlivening addition to combat vehicles and to models of buildings — foliage caught on the running gear, on a superstructure, under a fender or in a roof gutter is the kind of detail that tells the story of the terrain a vehicle has driven through in a military diorama.
Work on a base and with tweezers, as the leaves are very light and fly away. On the ground it proves best to apply thinned PVA glue with a drop of dish soap, sprinkle the foliage on and let it dry undisturbed, so that the layer stays fluffy. Onto a tree armature the leaves are sprinkled into freshly sprayed matte varnish or thin glue and the excess shaken back into the bag. Once dry, shade the area gently with an airbrush or with pigments and fix loose pieces with a light overspray.
This is a modeling material, not a kit. The glue, the tree armature and the paints are not included in the package.
