About product

The French Saint-Chamond Early 1:35 (Hobby Boss)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the French heavy tank Saint-Chamond in its early form (Early), in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss. The model captures the characteristic long, overhanging hull with the gun in the nose and the short tracked running gear. The box offers a detailed hull, running gear and superstructure; small photo-etched parts and a decal sheet are usually included as well.

The real subject

The Saint-Chamond was the second French heavy tank of the First World War, built from April 1917 to the summer of 1918 in a quantity of around four hundred. It came about out of commercial rivalry with the makers of the Schneider CA1 tank. The design, however, was not a success: the tracked running gear was too short for a vehicle of that length and of more than twenty tons, so the machine had trouble in broken ground and when crossing trenches. The early machines carried a gun of 75 mm caliber in the nose and several machine guns; later modifications brought thicker frontal armor and wider tracks.

Building and painting tips

Assemble the running gear with the tracks and paint the interior before you close the large hull up. Glue the parts with a liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer and spray with an airbrush; a multi-color camouflage scheme with hard or soft edges suits the tanks of the First World War. Weathering comes from a wash in the recesses, from picking out the rivets and the edges and from dust and mud pigments on the running gear.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of First World War vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers interested in early French tanks
  • Builders who will appreciate an unusual subject and a multi-color camouflage

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was the second French heavy tank of the First World War, built from 1917. It came about alongside the Schneider CA1 tank out of the commercial rivalry of their makers.

Early marks the early production form. Later machines received thicker frontal armor and wider tracks, which were meant to ease the original shortcomings of the design.

It is a moderately demanding armor kit; the running gear with the tracks and the large hull call for care, but a more advanced beginner will manage them.
